"Rob the Rubbish" is the name affectionately given to me, Robin Kevan (63), a retired social worker, in my home town of Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, Wales. I became well known for voluntarily getting up early most days and clearing litter from the streets and surrounding area of my home town. After retiring from work, I began to notice how much litter there was when I was out walking around my beautiful home area. It was bad and began to impact on my life. I decided to do something about it.

I understand that litter is a major problem worldwide and that there are many complex sociological reasons why it finds its way onto our streets and rural places. I also understand that there are no easy answers either. However, at 63 years of age, I feel I cannot wait for a generation of children to be educated in conventional ways about the problem. Whilst that education is taking place litter tends to stay on the ground and anyway, setting an example is part of educating our young isn't it?

So I decided that just maybe an equally effective way of dealing with the problem was to turn litter on its head. I decided not to be confrontational or grumpy about it but to seek to use it to mine and the wider community's advantage by picking it up. My philosophy is that once litter is gone it is no longer a problem and cannot offend any more. What's more, the beauty it was hiding can be seen once again.

“Rob the Rubbish” has gained many personal positives from dealing with litter in this way. These include; getting up in the morning with a sense of purpose; having the world to myself at the best time of day; physical fitness from the daily walks and the satisfaction that my beautiful town is litter free. Unexpected spin offs have been the inspiration to single-handedly clean up Ben Nevis, Snowdon, Scafell Pike and many other British mountains and to having developed an ongoing commitment to these and other magnificent rural British icons.

It has also taken me to the Everest region where I was received with much enthusiasm when they realised I wasn't altogether crazy!!

I have had a lot of fun, meeting lots of other like minded positive people who in turn are inspired by and inspire me.

My cleaning of the Everest Trail in the Autumn of 2006 became world news. For me it was not only to do my bit for one of the world’s most beautiful places, but also to highlight the fact that litter and waste are global issues that we as individuals can all do something about if we have the will, focus and energy.
